What is your Theme for the New Year?

What is your Theme for the New Year?

As we look forward to starting a new year, I want to encourage you to dream big. Dream big in spite of the uncertainty that surrounds 2021. Focus your thoughts on the goals and dreams you have. I know, that sounds easier said than done. Here is my favorite trick to have a new year full of accomplished goals.

At the close of every year, my husband and I choose a word, or phrase that will be our family's theme for the year.  This theme helps us focus on the important things we want to accomplish. Honestly, I don't remember the original theme we chose for 2020. Once we saw that a pandemic was headed our way, we decided to change the theme to "Health and Prosperity". This theme helped us stand in faith, and believe for the best -- no matter what the circumstances around us were.

First, you will pick a theme. Picking a theme will help you focus on your goals. When you’re picking a theme, I want you to think about what you would like to accomplish in the new year. Grab a notebook and write down your thoughts at the top of the page. Feel free to use the theme Health and Prosperity, if you would like. (See example.)

If you are having trouble choosing a theme, no worries. Just keep working through the worksheet below, and your theme will come.

Next, you will write the top 5 goals you have for the year under your chosen theme. (See example.)

After you have written down your top 5 goals, write out the action steps you need to take to accomplish those goals. Remember, a goal without a plan is a wish, so let's turn those wishes into reality by planning ahead.  For example, I wrote down “Double my Sales” as a goal for my business. This goal ties into prosperity. I asked myself, “How am I going to make more sales?” I decided, I need to post more consistently on my social media, and design more products to launch. I chose to make 5 new hemp teas. Those two things were my action plan.

It is also important to give yourself realistic deadlines. Giving yourself a deadline will help put an urgency on when you will accomplish different tasks. Each month, you should be accomplishing different action plans that get you one step closer to your end goals.

This little practice helped us thrive in 2020, not just survive. I want you to keep your theme at the forefront of your mind. Write it in your planner, and post it on your refrigerator where you can see it everyday.

Throughout the year, when things get hard, grab a sheet of paper and write the theme at the top of the page. Under the theme, I want you to write more action plans, or ideas. I like to call this dream building.  Use this time to meditate on what you want to accomplish, and how you are going to do it.

If you follow these steps, in one year’s time, I know you will be proud of all the things you have accomplished.

Personally, when I look back at 2020, we suffered some heartbreaking losses, but when we focused on our theme “Prosperity and Health”, we were able to accomplish many of our goals, and we are well on our way to accomplishing more in 2021.

My prayer for you in this new year is for prosperity, health, a strong family, and love. Although, we might not know what 2021 has in store for us, we will continue to reach for our goals and dreams. I believe in you!

Onward and Upward,
Vanessa Williams
