With May, almost wrapping up spring, the days start to feel hotter, longer, and inspiring for an adventure in nature. With a handful of hiking destinations, The Sun City offers a variety of sights to indulge in. Walk with us on UVFM trail to explore El Paso’s unique hiking spots before The Sun heats our summer plans.
Our first moderately challenging route begins north of The Arroyo Park on Robinson Avenue; Palisades Canyon Loop. Open year round, this trail extends to a total of a 5-mile loop. Popular for not only hiking, but mountain biking & birding. While there’s only a few marked spots to stay on track, we recommend you keep your GPS on for the duration of your hike. Average time of completion is marked at 2 hours and 25 mins, making it one of the shortest hikes on our list.
Next up we have The Ron Coleman Trail seated in McKelligon Canyon Road. This trail is perfect if you are barely beginning to explore the art of hiking, but beware, it is definitely not for the faint-hearted. Ron Coleman Trail is 3.7 miles (5.95 km) long, with an average completion time of a little over 3 hours. Centered in the Franklin Mountains, you are sure to find scenic views with less lushness. Enjoy the sun rise in its slowest hours between 6 a.m and 9 a.m. or The Sun City’s beautiful and unforgettable sunsets with moderate smaller crowds between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Water, sunscreen, and hats are encouraged.
Lastly, we have Lost Dog Trail Loop located in our very own Franklin Mountain State Park. With a much longer trail length of 7.7 miles (12.39 km) long, this trail is a favorite among El Pasoans. With wildlife surrounding this trail, you can expect to enjoy walking, trail running, and even mountain biking. Dogs are welcome and are required to be on a leash for the duration of your time on this trail. If hiking is not your jam, and you prefer slow walks, you can expect to enjoy some serene time during the quieter times of the day, usually between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m.

Whether you are enjoying the magic of a sunrise, the thrill of mountain biking, or simply trying hiking as a new activity, be sure to carry water, sunscreen, & a hat for you to power through this adventure.
